MONDRIAAN

This project started with a 2D painting of Piet Mondriaan. We had to translate it into a 3D model. I found a fascination in his work, espcially the early pieces. Mondriaan began first by painting nature and later turning it into an abstract masterpiece that we know of him today.  I translated his work in three compositions:

  • The First Composition shows a direct relation with Mondriaan's later works. The use of lines (white, black) and primary colors (red, blue and yellow). Here mostly positive space is created.

  • The Second Composition has the positive space changed into negative space.

  • The Third Composition is made out of wood chips, bringing back an abstract form made from natural material. The contrast is formed by using steel.

BOTERDIEP

New appartments in Boterdiep, Groningen. The location was analyzed, seeing it through it's historical context. This gives a clear understunding of how it was developed through out the years.

The most important aspect for the new appartments was that it should not affect the existing structure of Boterdiep. Due to the lack of space, this was a challenge. The concept was multiple usage: parking space, public library and child center. The new appartments are not only available for the residents but also give something to society.

GIMMICK

The Gimmick was a complex project because it asked more then just a design. There were no boundaries set to start from. It was up to the student to formulate their own boundaries on which to design their Gimmick. This was a real challenge !

In this process, I searched for a location that would have a close interaction between Student and Gimmick. The Gimmick is built over a path where Students walk every day on their way to classes.
